Visit from YMCA kids
Notes:
YMCA: The visit went pretty well. First Professor Vivian gave a talk to the kids about Bees. They then tasted honey and walked around the garden tasting a few more things. We had then put some sunflower seeds into seed blocks, which was easy enough. The kids then planted radish seeds into cups that they could take home, and then painted gourds and made hand prints on the garage.
-Next time we should make sure we have an abundance of activities planned. This year the kids were here with 15 unexpected minutes free it and it was pretty hard to manage them.
-Also we should probably prepare more than a day ahead of time, and have paint that is more kid friendly and won’t stain everything.
-With the bee hives being so close to the house, it was hard to make sure the children stayed clear of them. All workers need to be attentive to the group, and not get caught up in conversations because there’s a lot of space for the kids to roam and places to get hurt.
Berries: This year we kind of missed the boat as far as black raspberries go. Black raspberries produce in Mid to late June, and though we gathered a bit here at the garden, we missed the big harvest at the farm this year.
